There are a lot of myths concerning tanning and ultraviolet light. 1) Some people think that exposure to the sun can cause skin cancer.
2) There is a false statement that a tan cannot provide the protection of the skin. A tan is really the protection of skin from damage made by the sun. Melanin is produced in the skin to color it in a dark color. 3) There is a false statement that a tanning bed is a safe way to get a tan. Both a tanning bed and the sun produce ultraviolet rays, but a tanning bed makes more damage to the skin due to the production of UVA radiation that enters into the deep layers of skin. UVA and UVB rays, that are available in the sunlight, are filtered by the ozone layer.
4) A sunscreen cannot provide the long duration of a sun bath. It cannot last for a long time and it should be renewed. You can easily find out how long you can lie in the sun with a sunscreen applied on your body. For the purpose you should multiply the SPF (Sun Protection Factor) by 10 and you will know how many minutes you can safely lie in the sun. When the time, your skin is protected with a sunscreen, is over, you should renew a sunscreen applying it again on your skin.
5) Some people are mistaken, when they think that a sunscreen is not obligatory in winter. When you're outside, no matter, whether it is cold, cloudy, rainy or sunny; you expose your skin to UV rays, that’s why you should provide the protection to your skin.
6) Some people consider that a sunscreen isn’t necessary, when you are in the mountains. It should be remembered that in the mountains the sun's rays are more intense due to the thin air and an inability of atmosphere to provide you proper protection.
7) Some people think that they do not need sunshine for the production of vitamin D; they can use dietary supplements instead. To be healthy it is necessary to expose your skin to the sun regularly.
